While some would say "anything goes" on the Red Carpet and the more outlandish fashions tend to garner more attention, I believe "less is more"...especially for more "mature" women. Case in point was the recent Tony Awards honoring Broadway. Demonstrating that showing less skin is actually more elegant and sophisticated is Bette Midler's gown:

Same goes for Sally Field's choice. And in addition to the neckline framing her face beautifully, the navy blue hue is one of best for complimenting her coloring:
